You may be familiar with the name "Mary Cariola Children's Center," but you might not know what the Center does and the role it plays in people's lives throughout Monroe County.
The organization was founded in 1944 by Mary Cariola, after her nephew was born with physical and developmental disabilities. When her nephew reached school age, the family could not find a setting for him to learn and socialize. Mary Cariola developed a solution to this problem by starting a day care center for handicapped children- a place where children could have social, recreational and educational experiences.
Seventy years later, the Mary Cariola Children’s Center (MCCC) has grown by leaps and bounds. The school serves 450 students, ages 3-21. Its residential facilities house nearly 50 students across the county serving a population of children with multiple complex disabilities. To deliver these services, MCCC employs approximately 700 people; it is now the 48th largest employer in Monroe County.
MCCC provides not only educational services, but a range of additional services such as music, physical, behavioral and occupational therapies. Medical services are also provided on site to limit the amount of traveling students need to undertake during the school day.
The Mary Cariola Children’s Center is funded in part by school districts that reimburse the Center for tuition, but this does not cover all the Center’s costs. The Center recently began a capital campaign to assist with building a new residential home right in Penfield, at the corner of State and Jackson Roads. This new home will serve those with serious medical disabilities, containing state-of-the-art medical equipment for residents and providing respite care to families. The new home will open in December so children can be in the home for the holidays!
You can be part of welcoming MCCC to Penfield by joining the Penfield Business Chamber on Sunday, September 24th for “Walking on Sunshine” to raise funds for the new home. The Penfield Business Chamber is fielding a team to participate in Mary Cariola's largest fundraising event. Come out for a stroll, support the work being done at Mary Cariola and enjoy family activities, food and fun!
